Rooftop Tent Mounting Guide

Choose the right mounting setup for your vehicle and rooftop tent. Each roof rack type requires specific considerations for safe and secure installation.

Roof Rack Types

Factory Roof Rails

Pre-installed rails running lengthwise on your vehicle's roof. Common on SUVs and wagons.

Mounting Advice: Install crossbars compatible with your rail system. Ensure crossbars are rated for your tent's weight plus occupants. Position crossbars according to tent manufacturer's specifications for optimal weight distribution. Will utilise standard mounts supplied with the tent.

Aftermarket Roof Racks

Heavy-duty rack systems like Rhino-Rack, Yakima, or Thule designed for serious loads.

Mounting Advice: Verify the rack's dynamic weight rating will support your tent and accessories. Consider a rack with integrated mounting channels for easier tent installation. We can supply custom brackets to suit the roof rack.

canopy or tub rack

Vehicles with a fibre glass canopy, aluminium canopy or tub rack.

Mounting Advice: Ensure your fibreglass canopy has internal bracing to support the weight. Always check the canopy weight rating and fit the necessary bracing to support the weight.

Tray & Canopy

Steel or aluminium tray and canopy set up.

Mounting Advice: You can mount to pre-fitted roof racks or bars on the canopy, or if none, through the structural supports inside the canopy. We often do custom bars for these set ups - reach out to the team for more information.

General Mounting Do's and Don'ts

Do's

Always check your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating before purchasing.
Re-check all bolts and mounting hardware after the first 100km of driving
Regularly check mounting hardware and replace if necessary.
Distribute weight evenly across crossbars and ensure tent is centred on the vehicle.
Follow the tent manufacturer's installation instructions and spacing requirements.

Don'ts

Never exceed your vehicle's maximum roof load capacity including tent, occupants, and gear.
Don't mount a tent on roof racks not rated for the combined weight.
Avoid mounting too far forward or back as this affects vehicle handling and stability.
Don't use damaged, rusted, or worn mounting hardware or crossbars.
Never drive with the tent open or partially secured to the roof rack.

Understanding Roof Load Ratings & Safe Installation

Essential information before mounting your rooftop tent setup.

Vehicle & Equipment Load Ratings

Your vehicle's roof has a maximum dynamic load rating (weight while driving) and static load rating (weight while stationary). These ratings are specified by the manufacturer and should never be exceeded. Roof racks and mounting equipment also have their own load ratings. Always use the lowest rating between your vehicle roof and mounting equipment to determine your safe maximum load.

Risk Factors of Exceeding Ratings

Exceeding your vehicle's load ratings can cause structural damage to the roof, compromise vehicle handling and stability, increase braking distance, void your vehicle warranty, and create serious safety hazards for you and other road users.

Maximum Overhang Guidelines

When mounting your rooftop tent, it is important not to exceed 500mm overhang at the front or rear (from the point of contact on the roof rack/bar). This ensures that the tent remains well supported for travel and use.

Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Verify your vehicle's roof load rating in the owner's manual
  • Check roof rack and mounting equipment load ratings
  • Inspect roof condition for damage or weak points
  • Ensure all mounting hardware is compatible with your vehicle
  • Calculate total weight and check against your roof load rating. Do not exceed.
